Researchers at the University of California, San Diego have found that semaglutide, the active ingredient in the weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, may decelerate biological aging markers by reducing inflammation and decreasing excess fat.1 A randomized controlled trial involving 108 adults with HIV-related lipodystrophy showed that participants receiving periodic semaglutide injections demonstrated a 9% slower rate of biological aging compared to those receiving placebo, as measured by the DunedinPACE epigenetic clock.1 This marks the first time human evidence has suggested the medication may influence aging processes, with findings published in Nature Communications and npj Aging in 2026.1
However, researchers emphasized the scope of these findings.1 "We are not saying semaglutide reverses aging or makes people younger; what we are seeing are signals that it may slow certain biological processes related to aging," Dr. Michael Corley stated.1 A separate trial noted that 42% of participants showed slowed biological aging, while 34% demonstrated aging deceleration linked to all-cause mortality.1 Despite these promising results, the research team indicated that larger-scale studies are necessary to confirm these observations and establish the drug's broader impact on aging processes.1
