The English Heritage organization has acquired vivid archival footage documenting the 900th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Hastings, held on October 14, 1966.1 The event drew approximately 500 participants from the University of Kent and the University of Sussex, along with around 30,000 spectators.1 The film, originally shot on 300 reels by local electronics manufacturer Alan Wootton, was recently donated to English Heritage by Wootton's son Cliff and has since been edited into a 12-minute documentary.1
The reenactment captured considerable physical intensity, with participant Peter Sampson recalling that there was "a lot of real pushing and fighting" on the day.1 One participant named John sustained a head injury after being struck with a foam spear during the action.1 While many historical details in the production departed from strict accuracy, the footage preserves both the vigorous combat and the enthusiasm of the assembled crowd.1
This year's Battle of Hastings reenactment is scheduled for October 10 and 11, expecting to involve approximately 1,000 performers.1
