Example.com, the demonstration domain reserved by IANA for documentation purposes, underwent its most significant redesign in nearly 20 years on September 28, 2026.1 The update introduced JavaScript-powered multilingual functionality supporting six languages—English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish—with content rotating every five seconds.1 The redesign also incorporated SVG book icons designed to minimize bandwidth consumption.1
The domain has a lengthy history dating back to January 1, 1999, when it first launched.1 Its earliest archived version appeared on the Wayback Machine on January 20, 2002, followed by the adoption of modern copy on March 28, 2002.1 More recently, the site migrated from Apache to the EdgeCast CDN on July 29, 2013, and subsequently moved to Cloudflare on December 17, 2025, ahead of this latest redesign.1
IANA emphasized that the domain's primary purpose remains providing a reserved name for documentation and example use in internet specifications, and the organization does not encourage its use for availability testing.1
