Blake Stephenson, the Conservative Party's shadow minister and member of parliament for Mid Bedfordshire, has claimed that parts of Luton constitute dangerous areas where white people are unwilling to venture.1 Speaking at a fringe event during the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, Stephenson stated: "I think the town is a shadow of its former self. There are parts of that town – and unfortunately the police will tell you this – it can be a very dangerous place. There are parts where white people won't go."1 He further criticized the town as suffering from segregated communities.1
The remarks have drawn swift denial from local authorities and community groups. Bedfordshire Police stated that "no-go areas do not exist in Bedfordshire."1 Stephenson's allegations have also drawn comparison to claims made by Anders Breivik, who cited Luton as containing "more than 1,000 Islamic no-go zones" in a 2012 court statement in Oslo.1 In separate comments, Stephenson asserted that the Equality Act has resulted in discrimination against "white young men."1
