Yemen's government military, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, has launched a major offensive against Iran-backed Houthi forces, claiming control of territory near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait.123 The Saudi-led alliance has deployed fighter jets to conduct extensive airstrikes, with coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki announcing an air campaign dubbed "Operation Dawn" involving 100 combat aircraft.4 According to military sources, coalition warplanes have destroyed over 300 high-value targets,3 while government forces have secured key positions including Duba airport and cut off supply routes to the port city of Mocha.3

Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi declared on Sunday that "all opportunities to de-escalate have been exhausted," marking the start of the broader offensive to reclaim Houthi-controlled territories across multiple fronts, including the capital Sanaa.3 The military operation involves ground forces, including the Giants Brigades, operating along coastal areas in coordination with airstrikes.4 Since the offensive began on August 6, fighting has resulted in at least 959 deaths and 5,000 injured, with 197,000 people displaced.3

The Houthis, who have controlled Sanaa and strategic positions since overthrowing the government in 2014, have denied retreating and claimed they have launched ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco oil facilities in Riyadh and Kurais.3 The military campaign reflects broader tensions over Middle East oil supply security,2 with British defense officials confirming that UK fighter jets are providing refueling support to the Saudi air force.4
