Theoretical astrophysicist Jim Fuller from Caltech has developed a new model suggesting that dying Sun-like stars could accumulate thousands of small velocity kicks from uneven mass ejections at their surfaces, ultimately propelling them to speeds around one kilometer per second 1. Each individual ejection imparts only a few meters per second of momentum, but across approximately 10,000 such events occurring over hundreds of thousands of years, these incremental pushes compound significantly 1.
Fuller explained the underlying physics at the 248th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Pasadena, noting that the process follows Newton's third law: "Each time this happens, the star gets a small kick in the opposite direction. It's like Newton said—every action has an equal and opposite reaction" 1. Such velocities are substantial enough to have dramatic consequences for binary star systems. According to Fuller, "if the orbital speed of a binary is less than the kick speed, a loosely bound binary will become gravitationally unbound" 1, potentially leading to the destruction of these systems or triggering stellar collisions.
