NASA has selected the GIMLI (Geophysical Instruments for Marius Hill Lunar Investigation) project to explore whether a prominent pit on the Moon connects to a vast underground lava tunnel 1. Led by the Planetary Science Institute and directed by senior scientist Than Putzig, the mission will deploy ground-penetrating radar, seismic sensors, gravity measurement instruments, and cameras to investigate the Marius Hill Pit, a mysterious formation on the lunar surface 1.
The investigation will be executed through NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program in partnership with Honeybee Robotics, a subsidiary of Blue Origin 1. Researchers from multiple institutions—including Montana State University, Johns Hopkins University, the Lunar and Planetary Institute, the University of Oslo, and the Norwegian Space Agency—are collaborating on the project, which is funded through NASA's Planetary Research and Sample Analysis Mission (PRISM) program 1. The findings are expected to shed light on the Moon's volcanic history while also identifying potential natural shelters for future astronauts exploring the lunar surface 1.
