China's meteorological authorities have transformed unpredictable natural phenomena into reliable travel experiences by releasing detailed weather-based tourism guidance.1 On September 22, the China Meteorological Administration released the "2026 National Autumn Viewing Guide" and "Golden Autumn Sunrise and Sunset Viewing Map," identifying suitable autumn viewing areas across 19 provinces and 33 sunrise and sunset observation points spread across 27 provinces.1
The fourth National Conference on Meteorological Tourism Development, held on September 29, unveiled the "National Report on High-Quality Development of Meteorological Tourism," which introduced 10 ice and snow tourism routes, 26 winter wellness destinations, and 59 stargazing sites, collectively covering nearly 400 premium weather-dependent tourist attractions nationwide.1 The report also publicized 42 innovative cases of meteorological and cultural-tourism integration.1 These comprehensive offerings have positioned weather-guided travel as an emerging cultural and tourism trend, with visitors during the National Day holidays following official meteorological guidance to visit scenic spots for autumn foliage viewing, stargazing, and other popular attractions.1
To support this initiative, China has significantly expanded meteorological monitoring infrastructure at major attractions.1 Among the country's 228 5A-level scenic areas, 425 meteorological observation stations have been installed, with an additional 612 stations deployed this year in high-risk mountain and water-based scenic areas.1 Notable destinations include Ningxia's northeast region, which experiences clear skies for over 300 days annually and receives minimal light pollution, earning it the designation of "Hometown of Stars," as well as Meili Snow Mountain, where the iconic "sunrise illuminating golden peaks" phenomenon typically occurs on clear mornings and lasts approximately 20 minutes.1
