The 4K restoration of "Spring in a Small Town," a landmark 1948 film directed by Chinese filmmaker Fei Mu, premiered in Asia at the Pingyao Film Palace during the tenth Pingyao International Film Festival, marking the 120th anniversary of the director's birth.1 The restoration of this work, which had been obscured for decades before its rediscovery, establishes it as the pioneering work of Chinese literati cinema and a paradigm of Eastern film aesthetics rooted in traditional Chinese culture.1
Fei Mu was born in Shanghai in 1906 and died of illness in Hong Kong in January 1951 at the age of 45.1 His directorial breakthrough came in 1936 with "Family Ethics," which became the first Chinese film to be actively purchased by an American distributor and publicly screened in the United States.1 The year 1948 marked the peak of his creative period: he collaborated with Mei Lanfang to produce "Life and Death Hatred," China's first color film, and completed "Spring in a Small Town" in just 101 days.1 In 2005, "Spring in a Small Town" topped the list of the best Chinese-language films of the century as evaluated by the Hong Kong Film Awards Association, receiving the highest number of votes.1 The Pingyao Film Festival established the Fei Mu Honor Award in 2017 to recognize and nurture emerging Chinese-language filmmakers.1
