Germany's Left Party has filed a lawsuit at the country's Constitutional Court against Economy Minister Katherina Reiche over statements she made using official government channels to criticize the party.1 Reiche posted a comment on her ministry's official Instagram account asserting that "antisemitism and the confiscation of property harm Germany and the economy," and during a visit to Ukraine, she told media outlets that "what the Left Party does in Berlin and what it represents is dangerous for Berlin and our country."1
The Left Party views the criticism as part of a broader campaign by the Christian Democratic Union and contends that similar statements constitute unlawful use of official platforms for political purposes.1 The party has already pursued legal action against comparable declarations made by officials in several other German states.1 While the states of Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein have withdrawn their similar statements, Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, and Hesse have not done so.1
