Within four days, three major pharmaceutical transactions totaling more than $180 billion reshaped the industry's competitive landscape.1 The deals underscore a strategic shift among global drugmakers toward acquiring external innovation to maintain market position.
Novartis and Abogen Biotherapeutics reached an RNA therapy licensing agreement, with Abogen receiving an upfront payment of $575 million and potential milestone payments of up to $7.2 billion.1 Separately, Sanofi expanded its antibody collaboration with Regeneron, which secured a prepayment of $1 billion with the potential to earn up to $7 billion in additional milestone payments.1 In a third transaction, Novo Nordisk acquired global exclusive rights to an oral weight-loss and blood-sugar-lowering drug from Hutchison China MediTech, with an initial payment of $300 million and a maximum total deal value of $2.6 billion.1 These three agreements occurred on October 2, October 1, and September 29, 2026, respectively.1
The rapid succession of deals reflects how multinational pharmaceutical corporations are increasingly turning to external partnerships and acquisitions to sustain their competitive advantages. Rather than relying solely on internal research pipelines, these transactions demonstrate a deliberate strategy of licensing promising therapeutic candidates from emerging biotech firms and specialized developers to strengthen product portfolios in high-priority therapeutic areas.
