Robotic dogs have been deployed across multiple Chinese cities for law enforcement patrol operations.1 A video released by Yunnan police captured a real police dog interacting with a robotic dog and a humanoid robot, showing the canine initially displaying confusion before attempting to establish its dominance.1
The mechanical counterparts offer significant operational advantages. Robotic dogs can conduct 24-hour continuous patrols without interruption and can be equipped with multiple surveillance devices including cameras, infrared night vision, facial recognition systems, and AI analysis capabilities.1 These machines can also be deployed into high-risk areas to execute specialized tasks.1
Several Chinese jurisdictions have already begun integrating these robotic units into their security operations. Chengdu in Sichuan province introduced police robotic dogs for routine patrol duties starting in December 2024.1 Nanjing in Jiangsu province deployed bomb disposal robotic dogs beginning in 2025,1 while Hefei Railway Station in Anhui province activated robotic dogs for patrol operations this year.1 The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced in August this year that it was investing $2 million to procure SPOT robotic dogs developed by Boston Dynamics.1
