Oil exports from the Middle East, excluding Iran, have rebounded to pre-conflict levels by the end of September, reaching between 19.5 and 22.5 million barrels per day 1. This recovery surpasses the pre-war average of approximately 18 million barrels daily 1, despite ongoing threats to shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Exporters have successfully circumvented the strategic waterway through alternative routes and ship-to-ship transfers, with approximately 40 percent of crude oil now bypassing the strait, compared to just 17 percent before the conflict 1.
The initial impact of the war was severe, with non-Iranian crude exports plummeting by 72 percent within ten days following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz 1. Major producers Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have expanded their use of alternative export pathways to maintain supply levels 1. In August, more than 70 percent of crude underwent mid-ocean transfers in the Gulf of Oman 1.
Shipping security remains a concern in the region. At least seven vessel incidents have been reported in recent weeks 1, including an October 1 incident in which the tanker Kazimah III was struck by an unidentified projectile, leading to the safe evacuation of its crew 1.
