A man approximately 45 years old was fatally shot by police on Sunday after a vehicle collision in regional New South Wales.1 The incident occurred around 2:50 p.m. at a location 84 kilometers north of Yass.1
Police responded to reports of a car striking a tree and discovered the man still inside the vehicle, carrying a loaded rifle.1 As officers attempted to approach and assess his condition, the man picked up the gun and pointed it directly at one of the officers.1 Police then opened fire, resulting in the man's death.1
According to Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty, "he picked up the gun and pointed it directly at the officer."1 The man had a known criminal history and had previously been subject to firearms-related offences.1 An independent review of the incident will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.1
