A decade after Australia legalized medicinal cannabis, the prescription landscape has transformed into a commercial marketplace marked by growing concerns over regulatory oversight and marketing practices.1 The Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) lists only two cannabis medications, representing less than 1% of products prescribed in the country, yet online prescription services have proliferated.1 Meanwhile, the health regulator Ahpra has taken action against 80 registered practitioners since 2019 for issues related to their cannabis prescribing.1
Medical experts have raised alarm over the potency and clinical justification of many prescriptions. Professor Matthew Large noted that illicit cannabis in the 1970s contained 2-5% THC, whereas products available today can reach 35% concentration.1 High-THC formulations are being prescribed for conditions including anxiety and insomnia, yet concerns persist about patient safety and whether practitioners are adequately informing patients of risks.1 The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has called for regulatory reforms to strengthen prescribing safeguards.1
Misleading marketing has also drawn scrutiny. Medicinal Organic Cannabis Australia (MOCA) previously claimed its products were "approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration" on its website before correcting the statement.1 Ahpra issued a statement asserting that "some registered health practitioners are prioritizing profit over patient safety," highlighting tensions between commercial interests and professional standards in a market that remains largely unregistered and loosely supervised.1
