During China's National Day holiday period, electric vehicle owners faced severe congestion at charging facilities along major expressways, with some drivers waiting more than five hours to recharge.1 The surge in demand highlighted the strain on charging infrastructure across the country's highway network.
A driver from Chengdu experienced particularly lengthy delays during a 1,000-kilometer journey, waiting four and a half hours at one service area and over an hour at another.1 At Lingjiang service area, one vehicle owner was assigned ticket number 99 and waited more than five hours before finally charging.1 On the Baomao Expressway at Dazhou North service area, an electric vehicle with only 1 percent battery remaining was pushed to the charging zone but still had to queue for approximately ten more positions.1 In one extreme case, a driver holding ticket number 140 was told that only vehicle number 29 had been served.1 Another driver surnamed Huang was forced to leave after charging to only 80 percent due to automatic flow-limiting measures implemented by staff to manage the large crowds.1
The scale of increased charging demand during the holiday period was substantial. From October 1 to 3, charging sessions at highway service stations nationwide reached 2.9686 million, representing a 48.41 percent increase compared to the same period last year.1 Total charging volume during these three days reached 71.6193 million kilowatt-hours, a 49.39 percent increase year-over-year.1 These statistics were compiled from 62,700 highway charging facilities monitored by the national charging infrastructure monitoring service platform.1
