During the National Day holiday period, young consumers have increasingly embraced DIY handicraft experiences such as bead crafting and patchwork, gradually replacing traditional tourist attractions as a preferred vacation activity.1 The surge in interest has prompted handcraft shops to expand their offerings by introducing diverse experiences and integrating café settings to upgrade their business models.1
The growth in this sector has been striking, with bead-crafting-related enterprise registrations jumping dramatically from 143 companies for the entire year of 2025 to over 4,000 by September 2026.1 Shop owner Chen Ying explained the appeal of these activities, noting that "many people lack experience, but they can quickly get the hang of it."1 An 18-year-old enthusiast, Lu Jiaqi, shared her perspective, saying "handicrafts themselves are therapeutic, and sharing finished pieces as gifts allows me to pass along that sense of joy."1
Industry professionals recognize the cultural significance of this trend. According to trendy toy sector veteran Pi Lei, these experiences transform regional culture into tangible objects that participants can create with their own hands and take home to share with others.1 This phenomenon has integrated into scenic tourism offerings, with destinations launching regionally-themed activities. Lianyungang's Yuwan scenic area in Jiangsu Province unveiled a large-scale bead-crafting recreation of "Divine Fish Transformation into Dragon," while Yinchuan in Ningxia launched a bead-crafting carnival featuring local elements such as Helan Mountain and wine culture.1
