A glacier collapse in the Himalayan region of northern Nepal triggered a devastating transboundary debris flow on August 26, claiming over 1,400 lives and leaving more than 6,000 people missing 1. In response to the disaster, a joint scientific research team composed of researchers from China Geology University (Beijing), the Nepal Academy of Sciences, and more than a dozen other institutions departed from Chengdu on October 4 to conduct field investigations into the causes and progression of the disaster 1.
The expedition comprises over 50 scientific researchers led by Wang Chengshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Bishal Upreti, an academician of the Nepal Academy of Sciences 1. The collaborative team also includes researchers from Chengdu University of Technology, Nanjing University, Sichuan University, and the Aerial Physics and Remote Sensing Center of the China Geological Survey, and plans to conduct approximately 20 days of on-site investigation 1. The affected region spans the Nepal-China border, including northern Nepal's Himalayan mountains and China's Tibet Gyirong Port 1.
