Australian authorities are examining the connections between Hama Al Hamami, a Flydubai co-pilot, and Australia, following a violent incident aboard a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight on September 30.1 Al Hamami attacked the aircraft's captain with an axe during the flight, which carried over 170 passengers and had been airborne for approximately two and a half hours.1 Passengers successfully intervened to stop the assault and secure the aircraft.1 The plane descended 17,000 feet (5,200 meters) before two backup pilots safely landed it in Saudi Arabia.1
Australian Federal Police confirmed they are investigating Al Hamami's links to Australia, including whether he was radicalized while in the country.1 The co-pilot obtained an Australian student visa in 2014 and studied in Australia between 2015 and 2017, though his visa was canceled in 2019 after he failed to continue his course enrollment.1 Captain Schmit Mathiher described being injured and lying on the floor when he realized the aircraft was descending.1
UAE prosecutors stated their investigation revealed Al Hamami attempted to commit "terrorist acts."1 Prior to the incident, he had been removed from flight training at Oman Air due to radical views.1 Al Hamami graduated from Buckinghamshire New University with a degree in aviation management in 2023.1
