The Pinglu Canal, a major water conservancy project connecting the Xi River to the Beibu Gulf, officially opened to navigation on September 16, 2026, at 10:20 a.m.1 The project represents a significant infrastructure achievement across the Guangxi region, with engineers and construction teams having overcome numerous technical challenges during its four-year development period.
The canal spans a total water level elevation change of 65 meters, with the Madao hub managing nearly 30 meters of this differential.1 A comprehensive soil and stone excavation totaling 315 million cubic meters was undertaken to construct the waterway.1 Among the project's engineering milestones, the Qishi hub features steel gates standing 36.4 meters high and weighing 978 tons, with water-sealing precision tolerances reaching 0.1 millimeters horizontally and 0.05 millimeters vertically.1 The canal's water-saving lock technology conserves over 1 billion cubic meters of water annually.1 Advanced sediment interception systems achieve a 90 percent mud-trapping rate.1 Single-day concrete pouring operations reached 16,409 cubic meters of pre-cooled mass concrete, setting a world record.1 Controlled underwater blasting maintained safety vibration standards reduced from conventional 2 centimeters per second to 0.2 centimeters per second, enabling protection of cultural heritage and ecological resources.1
The construction initiative demonstrated remarkable resource efficiency and land conservation outcomes. The project achieved a 98 percent comprehensive utilization rate for excavated materials, simultaneously creating 13,900 additional mu of arable land.1 Across the full route, 104 bridges required reconstruction, including six urban bridges in Qinzhou City.1
In recognition of its workforce, the Pinglu Canal Youth Commando Team received the China Youth May Fourth Medal Collective award in 2025, comprising 50 members with an average age of 32 years.1 Project leadership included Chief Director Cheng Yaofei, who assumed his role with the Pinglu Canal Group on July 13, 2022,1 alongside key figures such as Madao hub Project Manager Huang Haibin, Engineering Management Department Director He Junhui, and bridge design engineer Cai Zhubing.1
