Throughout 2025, customs nationwide seized 5,439 batches of invasive species. 1 In the first quarter of 2026 alone, officers confiscated over 1,000 exotic pets, including beetles and spiders among arthropods, frogs and salamanders among amphibians, and lizards and snakes among reptiles. 1 In May of this year, customs officials discovered 50 packages of mixed seeds—each weighing 500 grams and containing large quantities of cannabis seeds—hidden in mail parcels declared as "personal items." 1 Additionally, in 2025, Guangzhou customs dismantled a major smuggling operation involving pregnant women's blood samples that implicated illicit cross-border networks spanning 23 provinces nationwide. 1
To protect China's biological security, customs have established clear prohibitions: no living animals, plants, seeds, seedlings, or biological genetic materials may be carried or mailed into the country without proper quarantine approval. 1 Authorities are urging the public to travel responsibly, make honest declarations, and join in safeguarding the nation's biosecurity defenses. 1
