According to scholar Su Ziyun, this base represents a critical component of China's Indo-Pacific strategy, designed primarily to project air power westward toward the Indian Ocean 1. The location enables Chinese heavy fighter jets such as the J-16, which have a combat radius of 1,600 kilometers, to reach the Strait of Malacca 1.
