Researchers from the University of British Columbia have identified two previously unknown sea spider species in the Salish Sea, marking the first discovery of new sea spiders in the region in over a century 1. The findings, published in the journal Organisms Diversity & Evolution, were led by Cormac Toler-Scott and document seven sea spider species overall collected from the shallow waters of the Salish Sea, ranging from the surface to approximately 60 feet deep 1.
The two newly identified species represent distinct morphological adaptations. Callipallene pilosuspedes, measuring roughly one centimeter in length, is characterized by fine hair-like structures on its legs, a three-lobed mouth, and sensory hair projections 1. The second new species, Tanystylum kiixin, derives its name from an indigenous village near its discovery location and features legs covered with debris 1. Classification of both species was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy and DNA analysis 1. These discoveries were made alongside five previously known sea spider species found in the same survey area 1.
