Climate experts and energy leaders have issued an open letter calling for worldwide solar power expansion to reach approximately one billion people currently without electricity access, as well as billions more dependent on fossil fuels.1 The signatories include author Bill McKibben, former United Nations climate chief Christiana Figueres, and former Canadian Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna.1
The initiative aims to deliver clean, affordable electricity globally, though it faces significant scaling challenges. Current global solar capacity stands at 3 terawatts, with annual additions of approximately 1 terawatt, while achieving a complete global energy transition would require 50 terawatts of installed capacity.1 Despite this ambitious gap, experts regard the target as achievable with sufficient political commitment and international financing support.1 Global solar energy grew by 30 percent in 2025, marking the highest annual growth rate in eight years and representing more than tenfold expansion since 2015.1
Progress on renewable energy is accelerating on a broader front. Renewable energy sources surpassed coal for the first time in 2025's global electricity mix, a milestone not seen in a century.1 However, substantial regional disparities remain: roughly 655 million people still lack electricity access, and sub-Saharan Africa must triple its current electrification pace to achieve universal electricity by 2030.1 While Germany could potentially complete its energy transition within two to three years if political will materializes, reaching 80 to 90 percent renewable energy globally may not occur until 2040.1
