Five major European payment systems have established a joint venture to create a unified payments network, marking a significant move toward reducing the continent's reliance on US-dominated card schemes.1 The newly formed European Network for Payments will serve 1.3 million users across 13 European countries, representing over 70 percent of the European Union and Norway's population.1
The founding members of this initiative include Bancomat, Bizum, EPI Company/Wero, SIBS-MB WAY, and Vipps MobilePay.1 Headquartered in Madrid, the venture will connect existing national payment systems through a common technological layer, enabling seamless cross-border transactions while maintaining each system's independence.1 According to Martina Weimert, chief executive of the European Payments Initiative, fragmentation has long represented the "biggest obstacle" to European payment sovereignty.1
The network will launch in phases, beginning with cross-border personal transfers before expanding to e-commerce and retail point-of-sale transactions.1 This development aligns with the European Central Bank's plans to introduce a digital euro by 2029, which could complement the initiative.1
