British lawmakers have been informed that nearly half of the women who reported sexual abuse allegations against Mohamed Al Fayed to London police may be victims of human trafficking.1 A police investigation uncovered 70 survivors' accounts exhibiting trafficking characteristics, while the Home Office has confirmed at least 5 individuals as trafficking victims.1 However, survivors residing outside the United Kingdom face barriers to formal recognition through Britain's national referral mechanism due to geographic restrictions.1
The police force submitted referrals to the Home Office for both domestic and overseas-based victims, but those involving people living abroad were rejected, according to a police spokesperson.1 "We have therefore suspended any further such referrals," the force stated.1 Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner Eleanor Lyons noted that the Home Office's statutory guidance requires individuals to be present in the UK to be referred to the national referral mechanism.1 Among the accusers, approximately one-quarter now reside overseas, according to KP Law, the firm representing Amy and 277 other alleged victims of Fayed's abuse.1 Amy, who lives in Italy, described being trafficked from Harrods department store and her home to Fayed's private office and residence at 60 Park Lane in London.1
Over 500 women have filed allegations of abuse at various locations owned or associated with Fayed, including Harrods, Park Lane, Fulham Football Club, the Ritz Paris, and other properties.1
