China's Ministry of State Security held a solemn ceremony on September 30, the country's 13th Martyrs' Day, at the Unknown Heroes Memorial Square in western Beijing to honor undercover Communist agents who died in Taiwan during the 1950s 1. The event was attended by Minister of State Security Chen Yixin 1.
During the ceremony, Chen Yixin emphasized four spiritual qualities for attendees to emulate from these fallen agents: unwavering loyalty to the Party, courage to pioneer new ground, heroic resolve in facing danger, and a spirit of dedication and sacrifice 1. The memorial square itself, which opened in December 2013, is dedicated to approximately one thousand Communist agents who lost their lives in Taiwan 1.
The ceremony also marked the recent return of remains belonging to three agents who died 76 years ago in Taiwan—Lin Fan, Yu Chengzhi, and Zhang Wenxin—which have now been repatriated to mainland China 1.
