SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket launched Crew-13 from Cape Canaveral, Florida on October 2, reaching the International Space Station in 7 hours and 50 minutes, marking the fastest crewed US flight to the orbiting laboratory 2. The four-member crew comprises American astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Tetryatnikov 1.
The mission had been originally scheduled for mid-September but was postponed to allow for replacement of a valve in the Dragon spacecraft's propulsion system 2. Watkins made history as the first Black woman to lead a crew to orbit 1. The team will spend six months aboard the ISS, replacing the departing Crew-12 1. During the mission, Kutryk's wife is expected to give birth to their third child approximately two months into his assignment, which will mark the fourth instance in spaceflight history of a couple having a child while one partner is away from Earth 2.
