The Newcastle Knights defeated defending champions Penrith Panthers 22-14 in a preliminary final to secure a spot in the NRL Grand Final.1 Despite trailing 14-6 at halftime and playing with a numerical disadvantage after Phoenix Crossland was sent off in the 36th minute, the Knights mounted a second-half comeback, scoring three tries to overturn the deficit.1
Should the Knights claim the premiership, they would become the first team since 1934 to win the championship in the season immediately following a last-place finish.1 They will face the Sydney Roosters in the Grand Final—the last team to accomplish this feat in 2010.1 The Knights are only the second team in NRL history to reach a Grand Final after finishing on the bottom the previous year.1
The Knights' dramatic turnaround reflects significant organizational changes implemented since coach Justin Holbrook's appointment.1 Holbrook introduced Peter Parr as Chief Executive Officer and Chris James as Director of Football.1 The club has undertaken substantive restructuring, including a shift in attacking tactics and strengthened community engagement.1 To build cohesion, Holbrook and assistant coaches Brett Whitehead and Steve Heal shared accommodation as part of a team-building initiative.1 The roster has undergone considerable turnover, with 38 different halfback combinations between the start of the 2022 season and the end of 2025.1
Recent recruitment has bolstered the squad, with Dylan Brown joining from Parramatta and Sanden Smith arriving from the Roosters.1 The club has also benefited from internal resources, with Danny Buderus, the Knights' all-time appearance record holder, serving in a coaching capacity.1 Statistical improvements underscore the tactical evolution: by late September, the Knights led the NRL with 31 attacking raids launched from their own half.1 The organization has also deepened its connection to the local community, including a visit to a Hunter coal mine 100 meters underground to understand the region's working-class heritage.1 NRL legend Andrew Johns has made regular appearances at the club throughout the season.1
