Scientists at Tohoku University in Japan have solved a decades-old mystery surrounding Venus's lower atmosphere. Using microphysical modeling, researcher Hiroki Karyu and his team have determined that the yellow haze first observed in the 1970s by the Venera and Pioneer Venus probes is actually composed of particles formed through the interaction of cosmic dust and sulfuric acid 1. The findings have been published in the journal Nature Astronomy 1.
According to Karyu's research, "the continuous influx of cosmic dust is sufficient to maintain the observed particle size distribution in the lower haze layer" 1. These cosmic particles serve as condensation nuclei, facilitating cloud formation in the main cloud layer even when dispersed far from their initial source 1. The study employed microphysical models to analyze the microscale processes that generate clouds and precipitation on Earth and other celestial bodies 1.
