Researchers have employed the advanced AI model Opus 5.5 to conduct deep semantic searches through Dutch East India Company archives, uncovering a previously unknown eyewitness account of the extinct dodo bird.1 In April 1615, the Dutch ship Wapen van Amsterdam landed in Mauritius and "captured many turtles, dodos (dodeersen), and some geese and parrots," according to a ship's log that likely was authored by Isbrant Cornelisz van Petten.1
This discovery fills a significant gap in the historical record of the species, bridging documentation from 1611 to 1616.1 Additionally, researchers have identified a potential new lead connecting multiple dodo specimens in the court of Mughal Emperor Jahangir—a bird recorded by Portuguese Jesuit missionaries in Mauritius in 1616, which may in fact have been a dodo rather than an ostrich as previously catalogued.1 The most accurate surviving depiction of the dodo was created by Ustad Mansur, a court painter under Emperor Jahangir.1 The research team brings over a decade of specialized expertise to this work and plans to publish a comprehensive study on animal extinction in the early modern period.1
