Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee has announced a suspension of all executions scheduled for the remainder of the year following a failed execution attempt.1 Christa Pike, 50, survived two unsuccessful lethal injection attempts on Wednesday and was subsequently hospitalized.1 Pike had been sentenced to death for her involvement in the 1996 murder of 19-year-old Coleen Slemmer, a crime she committed at age 18 alongside her former boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, who beat, tortured, and killed the victim.1 She was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years.1
Following the failed execution, Governor Lee has ordered a third-party independent review of the state's execution procedures.1 The suspension marks the second execution failure in Tennessee this year; in May 2026, Tony Carruthers' execution was canceled after medical personnel were unable to locate a vein, and he was granted a one-year reprieve.1 The postponement will also delay the scheduled December 3 execution of Gary Sutton, another death row inmate.1
