Russian opposition figure Garry Kasparov has stated that he received warnings from both US and Lithuanian security officials regarding threats to his safety.1 The alert follows the US Department of Justice's recent indictment of five individuals alleged to be part of a Kremlin-linked network accused of planning attacks and assassinations against Russian dissidents and defectors across multiple countries, including the United States.1
The five suspects named in the indictment are Yuri Khramayev, Kirill Khramayev, Omis Romaguera Durutty, Yader Delgado Suarez, and Angel Eduardo Castro.1 According to John Eisenberg, the US National Security Deputy Assistant Attorney, these individuals have been operating as part of a "global assassination network" and have attempted to recruit US citizens and foreign nationals to carry out Kremlin-ordered killings.1 The Russian intelligence-linked network has been active since at least 2024.1
Kasparov, who retired from professional chess in 2005 and fled Russia in 2013, stated that neither he nor his family would ever be truly safe while Putin remains in power.1 Russia designated him a foreign agent following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and added him to its list of terrorists and extremists in 2024.1 Among other reported targets is Ilya Ponomarev, a former Russian parliamentarian who was the only legislator to vote against the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.1 Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the allegations until presented with "any credible evidence" or "specific facts."1
