Hasanin Fahmi Hussein, director of the Chinese Department at Ain Shams University in Egypt, discussed the challenges and opportunities of bringing Chinese literature to Arab audiences during an interview at the World Dialogue of Chinese Studies' Arab nations session.1 While progress has been made in disseminating Chinese stories, a gap in understanding still exists between Chinese works and Arab readers, one that must be bridged through direct translation and deeper cultural exchange.1
Hasanin has devoted herself to this mission as a translator of numerous Chinese literary works, including Mo Yan's "Red Sorghum Family" and "The Transparent Red Radish," Yu Hua's "Xu Sanguan Sells His Blood" and "Wencheng," Liu Zhenyun's "Cell Phone," and Li Juan's "My Altai."1 In preparing her translation of Mo Yan's novels, she traveled specifically to Gaomi, Mo Yan's hometown, to witness firsthand the settings depicted in his works.1 Her efforts reflect a broader shift in how Arab readers access Chinese literature. Previously, many Arab audiences encountered Chinese works through English or French translations;1 this practice has now given way to direct Arabic renderings that preserve the original voice and cultural nuance of the texts.
The growing interest among Arab readers is evident in Egypt's educational landscape. Ain Shams University's Chinese Department, the largest of its kind in Egypt and the Arab world, has seen a steady increase in student enrollment in recent years.1 Through Chinese language study and participation in cultural activities, more young Egyptians are gaining direct access to authentic Chinese culture.1 Hasanin emphasizes that Sinologists play a vital role in fostering mutual understanding between the two civilizations.1 This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt.1
