The Trump administration has dissolved or weakened security units within key U.S. agencies, including the Department of Justice and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, that were responsible for investigating foreign and domestic threats to American elections.1 Instead of maintaining focus on actual election security risks, officials have redirected their efforts toward unsubstantiated claims of widespread noncitizen voter fraud.1
The shift represents a significant departure from previous enforcement priorities. Between 2021 and 2024, the Justice Department's Election Threats Task Force prosecuted 21 cases and received over 2,000 threat reports, launching more than 100 investigations.1 In contrast, the department has now pursued over 90 voter fraud prosecutions in the past five weeks, with 50 targeting noncitizens—a dramatic increase compared to 13 cases brought during the Biden administration.1 Within her first day as Attorney General, Pam Bondi disbanded the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force.1
The administration has also made unsubstantiated claims about foreign interference in past elections. President Trump asserted during a prime-time address on July 16 that China obtained substantial voter information during the 2020 election,1 though these claims lack evidentiary support.1 Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers' requests to preserve election integrity resources during 2025 budget negotiations were disregarded.1
