Huang Xinsheng, a sanitation worker in Hunan Province, has gained widespread recognition as a poet who transforms her daily labor into literary expression. Her debut poetry collection, "The Human World I Have Swept," was published by Hunan People's Publishing House in May 2026, with the initial print run of 5,000 copies selling out within 100 days.1
Huang's path to literary recognition emerged from hardship and determination. After her husband died in a workplace accident at a construction site in 2011, she raised two sons alone while working as a sanitation worker.1 Despite these challenges, she pursued self-directed education in literature studies. In June 2025, she completed 13 course examinations and obtained a diploma in Chinese Language and Literature from Hunan Normal University.1 Her academic achievement led to further recognition when she was admitted as a participant in the Lu Xun Literary Academy's "One Academy, Three Sites" New Popular Literature and Arts Writer Specialized Training Program in September 2026.1
Beyond her individual creative pursuits, Huang has become an advocate for cultural expression among working-class communities. On World Book Day in 2025, she established Hunan's first sanitation workers' reading group, called the "Orange Light" Reading Association, which brought together eleven coworkers to engage with literature.1 Through both her poetry and her efforts to foster a reading culture among fellow laborers, Huang demonstrates how artistic practice and educational opportunity can flourish even in circumstances of economic hardship and manual work.
