The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned a temporary stay of execution issued by a lower court, clearing the way for Tennessee to proceed with the capital punishment of Christa Pike.1 Justice Brett Kavanaugh authorized the lifting of the suspension, which had halted Pike's lethal injection execution originally scheduled for Wednesday morning.1 Pike was sentenced to death for the 1996 murder of Colleen Slemmer.1
If carried out, Pike will become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.1 Three liberal justices—Sotomayor, Kagan, and Brown Jackson—dissented from the decision.1 Justice Sotomayor argued that "Tennessee's desire to expedite Pike's execution by a few days or even weeks cannot outweigh her 'fundamental interest in [her] own life.'"1 According to Pike's legal team, Tennessee had previously claimed that Pike falsified allegations of childhood sexual abuse, only to later concede that it did not dispute such claims.1 Earlier this week, Tennessee's governor rejected Pike's request for clemency.1
