An international research team comprising 137 scientists from 64 countries has determined that bats most likely first evolved in Europe between 65 and 60 million years ago during the late Paleocene epoch.1 The study, conducted through the Bat1K consortium and led by researchers at University College Dublin, analyzed 103 bat genomes and evidence from 44 fossil bat specimens spanning all 21 known bat families to reconstruct the evolutionary history of these mammals.1
The research reveals that both flight capability and echolocation emerged early in bat evolution, which may explain why bats have become one of the most successful mammal species on Earth.1 As the only mammals capable of true powered flight, bats account for approximately one-fifth of all existing mammal species.1 The findings were published in Nature on September 30, 2026.1
