Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have developed a novel vision correction technique called electromechanical reshaping (EMR) that requires neither lasers nor surgical incisions.1 The method uses small electrical potentials and specially shaped platinum lenses to temporarily soften the cornea, allowing it to be reshaped in approximately one minute.1
Early laboratory experiments conducted on tissue from twelve rabbit eyes demonstrated the technology's potential.1 Of these, ten eyes were treated to simulate myopia, and all successfully underwent corneal curvature changes to achieve the intended focal point.1 The researchers maintained cell viability throughout the process by precisely controlling pH gradients during corneal reshaping.1 Unlike LASIK, which requires incisions, the EMR approach accomplishes correction without cutting the cornea, positioning it as a potentially safer and less expensive alternative.1
The research remains in its preliminary stages, with the next phase involving live animal trials in rabbits.1 The work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health's National Eye Institute and the John Stauffer Charitable Trust.1
