Researchers from Florida Atlantic University have demonstrated that blacktip sharks possess the remarkable ability to detect low-frequency sounds from nearly 250 feet away and accurately pinpoint their direction 1. Conducting experiments in the wild off coastal Florida, the team used underwater speakers, drones, and freely swimming sharks to test their acoustic capabilities 1.
The sharks responded to all three low-frequency ranges tested—100–200 hertz, 200–400 hertz, and 400–800 hertz—and exhibited avoidance behavior by rapidly turning away from the sound source in approximately 70 percent of recorded instances 1. The control test using a 10-kilohertz tone produced no response from the animals 1. This research, published in Integrative Biology Volume 8, Issue 1 in 2026, represents the first quantified evidence that freely swimming sharks can both detect and directionally avoid sounds in the acoustic far field 1.
The study was conducted in shallow coastal waters near Palm Beach County, Florida, and received funding from the Colgan Foundation and the National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation 1.
