China's Taiwan Affairs Office has asserted that the Communist Party was the "mainstay that persisted in the anti-Japanese war," claiming the party "formulated correct strategic policies, opened vast battlefields behind enemy lines, and became the pillar of sustained resistance."1 The Democratic Progressive Party responded by highlighting a different historical interpretation familiar to Taiwan's people, characterizing the period as "one part anti-Japanese resistance, two parts appeasement, and seven parts development."1
DPP spokesperson Wu Cheng stated that Taiwan's understanding of wartime history differs from the Beijing narrative presented by the Taiwan Affairs Office.1 Party Chairperson Lai Ching-te had previously drawn attention to what the DPP characterized as erroneous Chinese historical claims, specifically citing the dissemination of "three 80-year" narratives.1 The DPP indicated it would closely monitor whether Beijing continues to attempt undermining Taiwan and the Republic of China's sovereignty in international forums through what the party described as false historical narratives.1 Taiwan's representative to the United States, Yu Da-wei, and Foreign Ministry Deputy Director General Wu Chih-chung were among officials who responded to Chinese assertions deemed inaccurate by Taipei.1
