A Japanese scholar has disclosed classified military documents showing that Chinese military leadership considered military intervention during Hong Kong's 2014 Umbrella Movement.1 According to the files obtained by Suzuki Takashi, a professor of Chinese politics at Daito Bunka University, Wei Liang, then political commissar of the Guangzhou Military Region, stated on November 2, 2014 that China should prepare for military action to respond to the extreme situation in Hong Kong.1 Wei further stated: "We should make full preparations to respond to Hong Kong's extreme situation through military action" and "We will receive orders and act immediately to ensure the situation is under control."1 The documents also indicate that Xi Jinping attended the relevant military meetings during this period.1
The classified military files, consisting of meeting records from October to November 2014, were released on the 30th.1 The Umbrella Movement lasted 79 days from September 26 to December 15, 2014.1 This marks the first public disclosure that China's military had seriously contemplated intervention in Hong Kong during the protests; however, the armed forces ultimately did not take military action.1
