Chen Yiyang, a key contributor to the famous "Li-Yi-Zhe" big-character poster that emerged during China's late Cultural Revolution period, has died at the age of 79 from a stroke on the 13th of this month.1 The poster, which appeared in Guangzhou in November 1974, comprised 67 sheets of paper containing over 26,000 characters and was authored by Li Zhengian, Chen Yiyang, Wang Xizhe, and Guo Hongzhi.1 The work gained widespread attention for its criticism of the Lin Biao faction and figures including Jiang Qing, though it was subsequently branded a "counter-revolutionary poster" by authorities in December 1974.1
The four authors were arrested simultaneously on March 2, 1977.1 However, their cases were reversed when the Guangdong Provincial Committee rehabilitated the "Li-Yi-Zhe" poster and released all four individuals on December 29-30, 1978.1 Among the surviving co-authors, Wang Xizhe was arrested again in 1981, sentenced to 14 years imprisonment, and granted parole in early 1993.1 More recently, Wang Xizhe attempted to travel from the United States to Hong Kong earlier this month but was denied entry and subsequently returned to the United States.1
