The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery in Exeter is presenting a contemporary art exhibition that investigates the intersection of fungal science and creative expression. Titled "Living Labyrinths," the show runs from October 3, 2024, to February 21, 2025, and was conceived over five years by chief curator Lara Goodband to celebrate what organizers describe as the cultural world of fungi.1
The exhibition's centerpiece is a sound installation by musician Jason Singh titled "The Intelligence Below," which transforms electrical signals produced by mycelium into music.1 Singh collected mycelial samples from two woodlands in Devon—Fingle and Yarner—and used biofeedback sensors to measure the voltage generated by the fungal networks, then converted these measurements into audio compositions.1 Singh's approach is grounded in the conviction that all living organisms generate and vibrate, and that this represents a means of connection across different forms of life.1
Alongside Singh's work, the exhibition features historical and contemporary artworks exploring fungal themes. Water colors by Beatrix Potter, loaned from the Victoria and Albert Museum, are on display alongside a newly named fungal species, Potteromyces asteroxylicola, which was discovered in 2023 and named in Potter's honor.1 Artist Jo Pearl has created a kinetic sculpture titled "In Balance" based on this species.1 Additionally, Gemma Anderson-Tempini's installation "Myco-Mother 2026" employs red sandstone and chocolate-colored soil collected from Devon in its construction and marks the first time the fungal ecosystems within the human body have been mapped artistically.1
