England's tern populations are rebounding after suffering sustained damage from avian flu, flooding, and extreme weather, according to new data released by the National Trust. 1 Long Nanny has recorded a historic high of at least 126 pairs of little terns nesting at the site, double the previous record, with at least 82 chicks successfully fledging and a final total likely exceeding 100. 1 Arctic terns at Long Nanny numbered at least 730 pairs this season, producing 1,346 eggs and showing a modest increase compared to the previous year, representing a recovery from 2023 when avian flu devastated the colony and rangers discovered over 600 dead chicks. 1
The turnaround extends to other key breeding sites. More than 1,100 pairs of sandwich terns have returned to Blakeney Point to breed, resuming their presence at the location after a two-year absence. 1 However, the recovery is uneven across regions. Arctic tern numbers at the Farne Islands declined by 27 percent, and common terns vanished entirely from the site, dropping from five pairs to zero. 1 Ben McCarthy, the National Trust's head of nature conservation, remarked that the achievements are "particularly heartening given the challenges seabirds have faced in recent years—from avian flu and extreme weather to broad-scale pressures on the marine environment." 1
