British painter J.M.W. Turner's masterpiece "Rome, from Mount Aventine" has made a brief return to the Italian capital nearly two centuries after the artist's departure, appearing in an exhibition at Palazzo Rondinini in central Rome before heading to auction in London.1 The painting is expected to sell for approximately £50 million at Sotheby's on December 9, 2024, marking a new auction record for Turner's work.1 According to Sotheby's senior specialist Julian Gascoigne, the canvas represents "the artist's only painting depicting Rome from his era" and stands as "his great love letter to the city that inspired him throughout his life."1
The work remains one of Turner's few paintings still in private hands and is in exceptional condition, having never been relined or undergone restoration.1 Turner first visited Rome in 1819, and the painting was first publicly exhibited in 1836 at the Royal Academy in London.1 The piece was commissioned in the late 1820s by Hugh Andrew Johnstone Munro of Novar and was later acquired in 1878 by the 5th Earl of Rosebery, Archibald Primrose, as a wedding gift.1 The work last sold at auction for £30.3 million in 2014.1
