朝鲜完成中俄两条跨境道路大桥

North Korea has recently opened two major road bridges that facilitate transport connections with its strategic allies, marking significant infrastructure developments along both its western and eastern borders.1 The New Yalu River Bridge, connecting China's Dandong to North Korea's Sinuiju, is scheduled for official opening on October 6, coinciding with the 77th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.1 This 3,000-meter-long, four-lane highway bridge is located approximately 15 kilometers downstream from the aging China-North Korea Friendship Bridge and represents the completion of a project substantially finished in 2014.1

North Korea opened the Tumen River Bridge on September 7, connecting the Rason region in North Korea to Hasan in Russia, establishing the first land route between the two countries.1 The New Yalu River Bridge project began planning in 2009 and construction in 2011, but faced delays of more than ten years due to postponed construction of customs facilities on the North Korean side.1

According to analysts, the staggered opening of these bridges reflects North Korea's strategic calculations.1 A former North Korean soldier and current director of the Seoul-based North Korea Research Institute stated that the bridge openings carry geopolitical significance, allowing North Korea to leverage its relationships with China and Russia to strengthen diplomatic leverage.1 South Korean experts have interpreted the accelerated opening of the Russian bridge while delaying the Chinese bridge as reflecting North Korea's effort to balance its dependence on both nations while maintaining autonomy.1 The opening of the new Chinese bridge indicates that North Korea has completed customs, clearance, and logistics warehouse facilities, demonstrating its economic opening requirements.1
