A three-year satellite tracking study has revealed that yellow-bellied sea turtles in the Galápagos Islands exhibit behavior contrary to what scientists anticipated, staying within coastal habitats near their home islands rather than undertaking the long-distance migrations typical of their species.1 Researchers monitored nine adult sea turtles—seven males and two females—beginning in 2015, with some tracking periods extending up to 418 days.1 Notably, none of the tagged turtles left the Galápagos Marine Reserve during the entire study period.1
The findings challenge previous assumptions about the species' migratory patterns. "We expected them to migrate to distant beaches in the western Pacific for breeding, but interestingly, over our three years of research, not a single satellite-tagged sea turtle even left the Galápagos Marine Reserve," said Professor John W. Rowe of Alma College, who led the research team.1 The tracked turtles maintained an average home range of approximately 1,498 square kilometers, with maximum distances of about 25 kilometers from the nearest island.1 Movement between islands occurred only during the cooler months from April to October.1 These findings underscore the critical importance of specific islands and coastal habitats for the survival and persistence of this turtle population.1 The research was published in Frontiers in Amphibian and Reptile Science in 2026.1
