A human rights organization has alleged that Vietnamese authorities unlawfully abducted two activists across the border in Cambodia and forcibly transported them to Vietnam.1 Tran Hiep, an Australian, and Nguyen Duc Thuan, a Norwegian, went missing on September 18 in the Kaoh Andaet region of southern Cambodia.1 According to Tran's wife Chloe Dang, her husband was in the area and had planned to meet her in Bangkok before returning to Australia.1
Vietnamese authorities arrested the two men along with a third individual, Thai Cong Truong Son, at the border in Tay Ninh Province.1 Vietnam's government claims all three confessed to being members of the organization Viet Tan and entered the country illegally using forged documents, asserting they had planned to carry out terrorist activities.1 However, Viet Tan denies these allegations, contending that its members disappeared in Cambodia and were forcibly taken to Vietnam, characterizing the action as a violation of international law.1
The incident has drawn international attention. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his government is providing consular support to Tran's family.1 Phil Robertson described Vietnam as "today's worst perpetrator of cross-border repression in Southeast Asia."1
