Malaysia has initiated the deportation of approximately 5,000 asylum seekers from Myanmar under a contentious agreement with Myanmar's military ruler Min Aung Hlaing.1 Three Myanmar Navy vessels were scheduled to depart Malaysia carrying the first batch of 1,476 deportees, among them members of the persecuted Rohingya Muslim minority.1
Human rights organizations have strongly criticized the repatriation, warning that those being sent back face severe risks including violence, persecution, and forced conscription into Myanmar's military.1 Male deportees are of particular concern, as there are fears they may be compelled to join the ongoing Myanmar civil conflict.1 Malaysia and Myanmar have not disclosed how they will address the substantial obstacles posed by this repatriation process.1
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended the policy, stating that asylum seekers "have clearly become a burden—a security burden, an economic burden, and a source of enmity among the people."1 Over 200,000 Rohingya are believed to currently reside in Malaysia.1 The broader context includes Myanmar's 2017 military campaign that displaced 750,000 Rohingya to Bangladesh.1 A Change.org petition filed in May calling for Rohingya expulsion garnered over 400,000 signatures.1
